Sound events not playing

This is an odd one I've not come across. XP is not playing any sound events.
No start up or shut down sounds. No program open/close sounds. Nothing.

BUT: If I go to Sound Properties and select a sound, they play fine. I can
play music through WMP and WinAmp, and play DVDs all with sound.

I have no viruses or spyware. Any ideas?

Still nothing. All the sound files are there and the registry entries are
ok. As I said, the events play fine in Sound Properties but in normal use,
there are no sounds.

Got it. It was a registry entry under: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 which said
Default. I deleted it and all is well. I can't imagine how that happened.
