Sound Driver

N

Nicole.Portman

I'm having a hard time with my sound on my computer. On Itunes, it
skips for the first few seconds and then will play fine, even upon
start-up, the windows XP start-up sounds will sound skipped or really
distorted.

The biggest problem is using programs like Youtube, the sound is very
very very distorted and even the video will be in slow motion.
However, if I let Itunes run a song for 10 seconds or so, the youtube
sound will start playing normally for a minute or so before it starts
to skip again so sometimes in order to watch you tube videos, I have
to constantly start a new itunes song.

should rebooting my sound driver help and if so, how do i do this?

Try opening device mgr, expand the sound tree,R.click on the sound hardware
(one at a time),select,uninstall,do not restart after each,once thru,close
out,
shutdown pc.If you have a sound card, move the card to another PCI slot,
start pc.XP will reinstall on restart.

Andrew,

Will this work if sound is on the motherboard?

Of course you won't be able to do what he suggested if your sound is on
your motherboard. Yes, you should try reinstalling your sound drivers.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too although it might not
work on Vista.

Malke,

Thanks for the advice.

I installed a Soundblaster Audigy SE which has some diagnostics built in.
On testing this new installation, the log showed the following:

Creative Diagnostics Test Log

Note the "Windows Multimedia Test fail" error message I now have some sense
of what the problem is but no idea of how to fix it.

1. Get the latest drivers for the sound card from Creative.
2. Make sure you have disabled onboard sound in the BIOS.
3. After you install the latest drivers, make sure you reboot.

Other than that, I see that you haven't provided:

1. The specs for your computer. For all I know you're trying to run on a
PIII with 128MB of RAM.
2. The answer to The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

When did it go wrong? I'm not sure. I think it was after I repaired my
Windows installation to give me access to add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel but can't say for sure

Asd I have indicated before, I have no problems with Media Player or with
listening to Sirius over the Internet. What is missing are the system sounds
and the volume control as Windows does not think a device has been installed,

Well, your computer is more than capable of using the Creative Audigy.
And you say that doing MVP Kelly Theriot's registry fix for the lack of
system sounds didn't help? If this is the case, then all I can suggest
is that you go to Device Manager, toggle on the Show Hidden Devices, and
uninstall every sound card that shows up. Reboot the machine and go into
the BIOS and make sure onboard sound is disabled. Reboot into Windows
and reinstall your Creative card with the latest drivers from Creative.

If that doesn't work, then I don't know.

Malke,

I had not looked at Kelly Theriot's registry patch but the one at Line 371
did the job. I have my sounds back and I'm a happy camper.

Many thanks and if you are ever in Whitehorse, call me and I'll buy you a
drink.
