when i click on sounds and devices in control panel and then click on audio
tab, the three default devices are all in grey ie they cannot be selected or
changed or anything, i presume this is why i cannot play music anyone any
idea how to rectify. thanks in advance.

Optimist,

Is the sound devices installed correctly? Right-click MY COMPUTER | PROPERTIES |
HARDWARE tab | DEVICE MANAGER button & look for yellow exclamation marks...

when i go to the other devices lists i find that there is a yellow question
mark overlapped by a yellow exclamation mark , when i select sound and audio
devices then select audio codecs properties and all the others it says they
are working properly but location unknown. I cannot update any of these
because the update wizard will only go so far then says it cant update. these
problems are the result of a partitioned formatted installation i did of
windows xp as explained in another question .

You will need the CD with the drivers on it for your sound card, or your
motherboard if the sound system is integrated on it instead of a
separate card.

i have now removed all my sound devices/drivers but how do i found out the
manufacturers of the sound card/drivers any suggestions thanks in advance.
