System sounds can't be configured

My windowsXP can't configure system sounds.In "Sounds and Audio Devices
Properties", it can't proview any sounds because the proview button is grey.
The Sound Reconder's button is grey too.
Music and video's sound is ok.
Why,How to fix it?

It would be helpful if you would bother to identify your sound hardware.
Without that, it's anybody's guess as to the cause of your problem. Usually,
your symptoms indicate that you do not have the correct sound drivers &
possibly add on utilities.
