When I connect through remote desktop to my desktop, the
sound device does not appear.

However, if I go directly to the desktop, the sound
devicce does show. Any ideas why the sound device
doesn't show when I'm connecting remotely?

Both machines are Windows XP with all the latest patches.

Have you configured the Remote Desktop connectoid to forward sound to your PC from the remote PC?
That is done in the local resources tab. Go to "Options -> Local Resources"...

yes. It was working fine until just recently. I managed
to get it to work once by uninstalling and then
reinstalling the sound driver, but the problem reappeared
again and I haven't been able to get it to work again
since.

One possible work around is to start the sound on the remote PC first, then make the Remote Desktop
connection.
