Serial port communication using remote desktop slow

We have an application running on a remote computer that needs to
communicate with a serial port device through remote desktop. It
seems that communication over the Internet via DSL is quite a bit
slower than working over the LAN.

- Downloading data from the device hooked up locally takes 10 seconds
- Downloading data from the device from the remote desktop pc takes 90
seconds
- Downloading data from the device when a VPN connection is used then
opening the remote desktop session takes 130 seconds

Is there some way to speed up this process? We can interact with the
application on the remote desktop session without much lag.
