sound card???

Hi I have winxp On the sound and audio
device properties the playback in fine
on sound record you can not move the sliders
on the record and on the midi playback
I can not click on the volume it is dead
If I need to update sound cards where do I go
I have a ac 97 codec combo driver (wdm)
and can wmp9 do this because I downloaded it.
