Sound and Display problems

About two weeks ago my monitor suddenly began acting funny and I lost all
sound.

Monitor bleeds black and gray in faint bars all the way across the screen.
The monitor works fine on another PC and two different monitors showed the
same problem on this PC

Simultaneously, I lost all sound. Speakers work on a different PC, and I
tried different speakers on this PC, and they don't work. The mute is not on,
and the volume is turned up.

Drivers for the video card and sound card have been updated. It didn't help.

After some research, I found out that the sound card, video card, network
card, and two USB controllers all share IRQ 11

Is this a problem? And if not, what could be causing my problems?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If not the answer, can
someone at least point me in some direction to research further?

Does system information (Accessories/System Tools) give any clues?
or Hardware Devices show any failed devices?
Presumably you dont have another vid./sound card to try? or could try a card
in another sys.
Whats display like in safe mode?

Thank you for your reply.

No problems in Device Manager. I checked that first. The only other thing I
found that might be relevant was the shared IRQ, but I don't know much about
that.

No, I don't have another card to try, or alternate system to experiment on.

The display problem and lack of sound are both present in safe mode. Thanks
for the idea though, I hadn't thought to try that.

I keep thinking that having both problems occur simultaneously should be a
clue, but it's beyond my ability to diagnose.

Thanks again for your thoughts.
