SOT <Rant> Whatever happened to sensible discussion?

Disclaimer: This is just to get somthing off my chest. It is clearly marked
as somewhat off topic, and as a rant, so please don't bother flaming me if
you disagree. Just don't read it.
I'm quite happy to enter into rational discussion though...

<Rant Mode>

Something that really winds me up in this group is what seems to be an
overruling attitude that 'Microsoft is great and can do no wrong, and anyone
that disagrees must be either stupid, or a troll'

I know that it is a MS newsgroup, and so that pretty much by definition, a
large proportion of the people here are MS fans, and probably already have
Vista installed and are happy with it.

HOWEVER, please understand that not everyone is in this position. I came to
this newsgroup because I was interested in Vista was considering upgrading
my computer, and wanted to hear some genuine feedback and advise on what the
new OS was like from people that knew. It was interesting to read the views
of some of the people who were talking about problems and concerns with
Vista. Now, I'm not stupid (or at least I like to think I'm not) and I'm not
going to take everything I read in a newsgroup as gospel. However, when I
read about some of these concerns, at least I can then go and research a
little more, find out if there is any truth in them, and then use that
information to help me make my decisions.
It is not really much use to someone in my position to just read posts that
say 'Vista is perfect and flawless, Microsoft is the greatest, and all other
operating systems are now redundant and useless, and anyone who thinks
otherwise is stupid'. Ok, that is a slight exageration - but only slight
though.

So a little request to all the raging MS fans in this group, if someone
posts a message suggesting that there may be a problem with Vista, and that
maybe isn't perfect (yet...) by all means, if you can prove them wrong, do
so, but please don't just abuse them and accuse them of being anti-microsoft
or a troll, maybe they could actually have a valid point, that might just be
useful to someone.

If you've got to here, thank you for reading :)

Chris,

In a perfect world, each of us would be polite, respectful, accomodating and
understanding to(&)of others.

However, the harsh reality of our human existance is that profound respect
for the individual and his/her feelings is not overwhelmingly common.

In-as-much as I genuinely appreciate the altruistic intent of your "little
request," I believe it is appropriate to offer you a reality-check:

Life is fair to everyone to the extent that everyone is treated unfairly.

There are people here that are capable of independent thought. Just ignore
the zealot muppets.

Yes, I'm sad to say that I do live in the real world. My 'Little Request'
was more of an effort to make a point than any real intention of getting
anyone to change their attitude or behavoir... :)

Hello ChrisM,

Your Post clearly reveals that you are a very intelligent person making a
very sincere Post.

If you have monitored this Forum for very long (perhaps only a short time),
have you noticed that some Posters have one intent, intentionally instigating
troubles and problems toward Vista users, and more specifically toward
Microsoft?

Many of the Post within these Forums are simply malicious and hostile for
apparently no other reason than self-pleasures while creating havoc toward
innocent users of Vista. The numbers of employees from Sun that make
malicious myth and rumor Posts within these Forums are seemingly legion;
previously encountered too many. Those Posts will not only shake ones
cranium, kinda think they would shake bark from a tree. The good part, daily
the Posts within these Forums improve; wishfully that will not change.
Although, innocent user induced conflicts while installing Vista, simply
because the user neglect reading the Install and Setup Files (new users have
the least conflicts, while experienced users have the most, from rushing
Vista's Install, wrongly doing it the ole fashion method).

Have a nice day,

LOL, pathetic reply. There is nothing wrong with my teeth!

Now, please tell me about your fictitious WEI scores and fantasy hardware
again?

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth,
And spotted the perils beneath,
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food,
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

I wish I'd been that much more willin'
When I had more tooth there than fillin'
To pass up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers
And to buy something else with me shillin'.

When I think of the lollies I licked,
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My Mother, she told me no end,
"If you got a tooth, you got a friend"
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin'
And pokin' and fussin'
Didn't seem worth the time... I could bite!

If I'd known I was paving the way,
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fillin's
Injections and drillin's
I'd have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lay in the old dentist's chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine,
In these molars of mine,
"Two amalgam," he'll say, "for in there."

How I laughed at my Mother's false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath,
But now comes the reckonin'
It's me they are beckonin'
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth

Chris, nicely stated -- I've seen traffic here that descends into an
I'm right, you're wrong diatribe between folks and it does a disservice
to all (not just the folks in a black/white only mind set).

There is much that is attractive in Vista -- and as folks become
increasingly familiar with it, advantages beneath the top veneer will
become apparent as well.

But an opening post that says 'Vista Sucks' -- is seemingly answered
with 'your an idiot'. Seems pretty foolish as a discussion.

The thing is, folks posting 'I can install this with Vista' really
SHOULD get constructive responses, rather than 'you fool, you are
trying to install something x years old, buy something else' or 'you
fool, your hardware is 4 years old, buy something new', or 'you
dastardly thief, you are trying to steal from Microsoft'. NONE of that
serves the newsgroup well.

I don't mind the << Microsoft is great and can do no wrong, and
anyone that disagrees must be either stupid, or a troll >> since they
do tend to be concise <g>

It's the VISTA's no good and the politically inspired who do go on and
on and post the same thing again and again that annoy me when they
interrupt what is meant to be a group of people helping each other.

Oh for the good old days of Compuserve when we could move them into the
sin bin and get on with helping get the system working.

But you can with the right news reader software. I use Gravity -- it
has an option -- Tools, Bozo Bin -- one can add names there readily...

Good off-line readers remind me of TAPCIS.

Good off-line readers are Virtual Access / VAOS which I'm using now.

But I meant the good old days when sysops would move the messages out
of sight, rebuke and even lock out those who were abusive <s>

Not hiding or deleting in my off line message base.

VA is a blessing here since I can collapse a thread -- yes it threads
messages although not as well as in the olden days since newsgroup
messages don't carry all the threading information -- and mark it read
with one keystroke.

I tried for awhile with Outlook Express and with Internet Explorer and
gave up .....

Right -- I'm using Gravity these days. To each his own of course.

Understood -- over in the Novell forums there is more proactive
discussion control. Threads like this are killed off or redirected to
community chat -- and when over there, any personal attacks will be
choked off as well.

I started my sysop life 20 years ago on CompuServe as a TeamB sysop
(like Charlie Russel who is over in the 64 bit and server newsgroups
here in Windows land).
I tried for awhile with Outlook Express and with Internet Explorer and
gave up .....
Understood -- same for me with Thunderbird -- it works, but
'application specific software' is better suited.

Nice that there are still a few of us about. I was on Lotus L-Team,
TeamHP and the wonderful Thinkpads forum after IBM let it go.
