Sort OT (hardware related)

Just wondering if anyone has any idea where to get DVD-RAM (read and
write) capable drives that can take *cartridges*.

My current DVD-RAM drive can only use the raw disk but taking a
double-sided DVD-RAM disk out of the cartridge sort of defeats the purpose
of having a protective cartridge. Not to mention that a double sided (not
dual layer) disk has few places where you can actually safely touch it.

And I really love the concept of these double sided DVD-RAM cartridges as
it's like having a 9.2 gig floppy!! Thing even looks like one, just a
little thicker and larger. Ahh the memories....

It's *perfect* for moving data between home and the office, if only I
could get my hands on the stupid drives.

Only place I've found the drives so far has been in Japan (big "surprise"
there) but getting electronics shipped from there is very difficult unless
you actually live there....and I unfortunately don't.

Have you tried searching the various DVD drive manufacturer's web sites to
find the model numbers of drives with the capability you want, then google
those model numbers to see where they are sold?
They aint cheap. Try Panasonic SW_9586

You can find almost anything @ pricewatch.com

http://www.shop4tech.com/z/DVD_Ram_Media/1_289/
http://www.computergiants.com/items/one_item.asp?part=160585

Those were the only ones that carried the 9 Gig double-sided cartridge
type.

Thanks for the links, good to know.

Though, it isn't the media I was looking for. It's the drives to read &
write the media. =)

Seems though that my father's finally found a US Vendor that actually has
these drives so I'll see if I can order them.

Thanks again,

DOH !!!!!

Sorry I miss interpreted your post.

Seems as though most drives that support DVD-RAM do not support cartridge
type media.

Like these ?:

drive.html

http://www.usb-ware.com/panasonic-lf-m821-oem.htm#dvdram

Note, I just did a quick web seacrh and these said they supported cartridge
loading.

Yep, you found the exact same sites my father had found as well. I was
primarily looking here in Europe and only checked newegg so far as far as
the US was concerned and came up empty there.

Thanks for the help. =)

Not much help but.....

Those drives had been along for a long time. A guy I worked with speced a
PC to have built for him in 2000, and he included a DVD-RAM drive. I
believe back then, all DVD-RAM was cartridge based.

It seems as though DVD-RAM never really took off, and ZIP disks had a
much larger market share, yet obviously not the storage capacity.

Yea! I didn't even know DVD RAM existed until like a few months ago.

As far as I know, that stuff took off very well in Japan. Amazon.co.jp has
the drives for like 60 bucks a piece. Unfortunately don't ship them to me
though!
