Sorry about this but ---- Defrag

D

Doug Mc

You guys are probably sick of talking about Defrag but please bear with me.

My son recently bought a system with XP.
I'm running W98SE and don't know beans about XP

He asked me how to defrag his PC.
I tried to use the same method I use with my 98 (telling him over the phone)
but he wasn't able to do it.

In 98, I use Ctl/Alt/Del and kill everything except Windows Explorer and
Systray, then run Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
and it works.

What's the secret of running it in XP?

Thanks a lot.
Doug

Tell him to open My Computer, right click on the C drive, go to Properties,
Tools, Defragment. No need to disable anything but the Virus Scan.

Thanks for the quick response!

Boy, that's a lot easier than in 98! I'll pass it along to him.

Thanks again,
Doug

Doug, XP has a good help feature. Click on Start | Help and Support.
Type in defrag in the search search box and it leads to three articles -
the first one gives exact directions. Help and Support is a good
feature to learn how to do things in XP.

You do *not* really need to kill all processes in Task manager, just
running applications that might modify things in the middle.

Then just the same - except in XP it is Start - *All* Programs -
Accessories etc, or go to My Computer, r-click the drive and Properties
- Tools section

You can find Defrag under System tools in Accessories or from the Management
Console in Admin. Tools.

I definitely would not recommend turning off Anti-Virus software in order to defrag. You leave yourself open to infection.
Tell him to open My Computer, right click on the C drive, go to Properties,
Tools, Defragment. No need to disable anything but the Virus Scan.

No, if you believe that disable the internet while doing so.

You should also turn it off when installing any program as well as Windows
Updates or your installation might become corrupted. Just getting into
computers, are you?
