Sony LCD Monitor problems

S

sienna_brown

I have Sony LCD monitor SDM-HS53. I have had this ongoing annoying
problem that comes and goes. Does anyone know how I can resolve it? I
don't want to pay money for a new one or take it into a shop (too
expensive). Is there something I can do to resolve it on my own?

Heres the problem:

The monitor goes blank (black screen), like the light dims down so bad,
it looks like it is off when using the computer. It happens doing
random things like surfing the internet, word processing, listening to
music, etc. This happens 3 or 4 times a day when using the computer.

To get the monitor screen back to normal I have to keep hitting the ON
button, turning it on and off. Sometimes this fixes it right away.
sometimes it takes 30 minutes to come back on. sometimes if will
flicker on for a split second and then go off.

What can i do about this short of throwing it out the window? Please
help!

Bad hardware.
Not bad software.
You need a new monitor or to get that one repaired.

Here is one question for you though...
What happens if you unplug it and plug it back in when it happens?
Or - if it has an external power brick (a possibility) - what happens when
you tap on the external power brick when it goes off like that on you?

Otherwise:

I appreciate the posting but come on, man. Are you serious? I already
know that! I'm asking HOW can I fix it (cheaply). What is the exact
problem? What is the mechanism that is causing it to do this? Please
tell me something I DON'T know.

Thanks!

As was said- You need a new monitor or to get that one repaired.

It is backlit, the tubes have a finite life which it seems you have
exceeded.

Perhaps you mis-read the title of the newsgroup you posted in..

"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general"

Windows XP General.. Not hardware. Windows XP.

If you want to know more about the hardware issue you may have - start
asking in a proper forum and/or look up things using Google. You can likely
find specification on LCD monitors, perhaps even the one you have, online.
It takes research on your part if you don't want to pay to have it
fixed/looked at. Just like anything else you want to do - it takes effort
on your part.

I'm not sitting in front of your machine - all I have to go by is your
description of the issue. You did not state you knew what the problem was -
you gave a scenario and you did it in a software/OS newsgroup. One is bound
to assume you have no idea what your problem is given those facts. I gave
you options.. It could be the power supply itself or - if you can still see
some picture - it could be the backlight for the LCD monitor. Replace the
power supply and/or replace the backlight.

Of course - since you already knew what was wrong - I can only assume you
just wanted to see if everyone else did? heh

Take it in - get it fixed or get a replacement. If you *could* have fixed
it - you would have tried and probably had more information to post with and
would have likely posted in a correct newsgroup. Given what you have and
where you have given it - you have likely gotten all the help we can give
you. =)

Ever tried getting specific parts for a computer component,
even if they are available. If this monitor were still under
warranty, SONY does not even do warranty repairs...it will
replace it. If it is too costly for you to replace the monitor,
should it be out of warranty, they try a substitute of buying,
a quality, flat-screen CRT monitor.

I had exactly the same problem with a NEC flat panel monitor.
NEC found that it was a bad solder connections and fixed it for $80. Of course I risked a $50
service charge if they could not fix it. Your monitor is in need of repair. I don't know what is
wrong with it, but it is not software related. Soon it will go totally black and you won't be able
to use it at all.

You know what your three options are. Choose one.

1. Replace it.

2. Repair it.

3. Throw it out the window.

Apparently you don't have the training for number two above so that narrows
down what "you" can actually do. Suggest you choose option one or three!
Three is the fun way. You get great satisfaction when it contacts the ground
below.

If you prefer more hands on..

Drill press.. Many holes.
(Handheld drill can suffice - but..)
Chainsaw.. (wear your goggles and long sleeves.)
Sledge hammer.. (wear your goggles.)

Or....

Take out the LCD panel and purchase a cheap old overhead projector and make
yourself a projector/monitor.

What can i do about this short of throwing it out the window? Please

It's a hardware problem. Take it in for repair, replace it or post to a
hardware group.
