Sony DV

I have a Sony HC-36 DV Camcorder that I am trying to connect via USB. The
software with the drivers, etc. is not compatible with Vista. Sony offered
no help whatsoever.

Is there a work around? Vista does not seem to have drivers built in to
detect my camcorder. I do not currently have firewire but perhaps that would
work?

Thanks in advance!

There was another post by someone with a Sony HC-32 that had a different
issue but was successful connecting via firewire. Perhaps that is the way
to go? Does that not require a Sony driver?

The reasons that a company may provide a driver is that the hardware they
sell deviates from the accepted standards for their data transmission. If a
company strictly adhered to these standards you would not ever need a driver
for USB or Firewire.

LOL please no pious sententious pompous elete, effete pseudo erudite
pronouncements that MSFT doesn't make drivers. I have been on the chats
with their driver and device teams for Vista--I know what they say they do
and don't do.

Botton Line: I tried to find your driver and could not on the web or Sony's
site. Further Sony says they don't support X64 in XP either. I have found
however, that often with a particular device, everyone and their brother
will say it doesn't work on Windows Vista, particularly the goofey totally
inaccurate MSFT UPgrade Advisor and my premise is that you don't know until
you actually try to use the driver despite all warnings it won't or can't.

Make sure you backup; set a restore point; do the Backup that you like best.
There has been some complaint that the Vista backup won't allow individual
file backup and Jill Zoeller of MSFT has responded on her blog that MSFT
wasn't desiginging this backup for Savvy users, only for the unsavvy
ones--"the core consumer aucdience"Jill's exact words. At least we know the
Redmond ethos and mind set that most of us are unsavvy dumb-downed people.
You go girl.

Jill knows how dumb her country is. She's watched its President and
leadership in action as hundreds of lives are fed to the slaughter and no
one does anything to stop it except to make sure they aren't involved.

Here's what happens when you drill the Sony site (and I searched the web)
for your driver. I was just curious how well a company where I have spent
some major bucks is accomodating Vista users and X64 XP or Vista these days.
They aren't. And it's one of hundreds if not thousands of devices sold on
MSFT Marketplace site that doesn't support Vista.

MSFT is glad to sell you the device on their site in their store and not
mention that they have this new OS called Visomething which may still have a
driver problem because MSFT sits on its ass with very little (and believe me
there is some communicatiion with companies like Sony and HP you betcha ass
'cause the driver device type team members done told us so) but very real
productive cooperation to get drivers until much too long past RTM.

Please no syncophantic yadas about the fact that the launch will take place
throughout January and Feb in selected cities in the US. I know. I posted
all of the dates last week.

I know that in less than 3 days MSFT will be selling Vista editions
(some of them) at Comp USA and Office 2007.

Yes. You can download the most recent USB driver and read the instructions

You might try in a year or two because the timetable for MSKBs, substantive
articles on Vista on MSFT site and drivers for 3rd party often seems to be
in lockstep.

You might also try to consult Denzel Washington because after seeing the
movie I think a "Deja Vu machine" might be the answser to working with Vista
and 3rd party driversand MSFT's ability to write support articles and
Technet and MSDN articles for Vista which goes on sale in bricks and mortar
stores in the US in 3 days.

I have seen scores of examples now where drivers for XP that either the MSFT
wizards and dialogue boxes or their erratic and often wrong so called Vista
Upgrade Advisor (the one from Microsoft the company who makes Vista) work on
Windows Vista any build through RTM.

Of course you backup, and I'd set a restore point, and I'd image if you
find the current dumbdowned backup not detailed enoguh to your liking. Jill
Zoeller [MSFT] says it was targeted at the MSFT Vista Core Market who aren't
savvy. Boy I'll say we understand that Redmond MSFT Vista team members
think customers aren't savvy--let me count the ways as Lizzie Browning would
say:

http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/ebbrowning/bl-ebbrown-sp-43.htm

File Backup in Windows Vista FAQ (For Non-Savy Users)
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/pages/file-backup-in-windows-vista-faq.aspx

"The new File Backup is too simple. Why didn’t you add more features, such
as location-based backup?

The file backup feature in Windows Vista is targeted at the core consumer
audience. To savvy users, it will appear quite simple, probably too simple
for you to use. For most consumers, however, it will hopefully be the right
balance of complexity and functionality to get them backing up their files,
which is something virtually none of them did in Windows XP, no matter how
capable the tool was."

---Jill Zoeller [MSFT Core File Services
Vista/Servers]

So you might want to use an image type backup like Ghost or Acronis or
similar that is Vista 'compatible'.

***Tip for Getting XP drivers or drivers even as old as 2001 that were
designed at the time of Win ME (that brilliant moment in OS history where 16
bit and 32 bit code were put in the blender along with some Longhorn Saloon
Shooters). Note: I'm certainly not advocating to start loading Win 9X
cdriers in Vista or XP but I have seen this help get in driver that won't
install otherwise that will work perfectly in Vista builds from July 05
through RTM.

I also worked with other people to get the print team to change their
default port so that many more XP drivers would work for printers and
scanners than were going to the way they were headed.

Install the driver from either the Add Hdw wiz or the Update driver wiz in
Device Manager reached by hitting Windows Key+ Pause break or typing
devmgmt.msc in run box by telling it
"Browse my computer>Update Driver Manually and then you substitute the file
path in the space for it that comes up manually making sure to designate the
location where the driver files are downloaded when you browse.

You may have to experiment with this since Vista is arbitrary and capricious
at times about how detailed they actually want the file path to be. I have
seen this work when the drivers files are located on another driver on a
dual boot with XP; I have seen this work when they are copied to Vista; I
have seen it work both ways, and sometimes the files' folder location must
be copied to Vista and that file path used and experimented with but..

Bottom line is it works. Vista has not loaded with 2 of my drivers since
5472. The sound driver Turtle Beach Santa Cruz never loads and takes a
special mod I found on a forum but that mod has worked everytime even when
lol scores of TBTs said it would not.

Total time it takes me to get these drivers up and running in Vista now that
I know the drill from so many installs--about 2.5 minutes. I have them ready
in a folder to go as soon as I get setup done.

Have you performed the obvious first? try other USB cables?; Check
batteries in (or power to) camcorder; connect directly to pc...not Hub?

I own Sony hardware and have had no problem with either their DSC-R1 Camera
(USB) or the HDR-FX1 camcorder (firewire) under XP64 and Vista64. Vista
recognized both installed the drivers and download of my pictures and video
have been flawless.

For video it's best to use firewire when that option is available, not all
camcorders have firewire capabilities. If your camcorder is USB only and
Sony does make some models this way then you're out of luck until Sony
produces the USB drivers.

I brought the camera to work where we are running Windows XP for 32-bit and
it, the cable and software work flawlessly. It all started right up without
any problems. So I think from a hardware standpoint I am ok. Also, at home

Vista must not recognize my particular camcorder and since Sony doesn't
provide Vista drivers, I am out of luck. I have a firewire option on the
camcorder but not on my computer. I guess I'll get an add on card for that.

That's good news HD. The OP should be up and running then. I know Sony's
site doesn't ackknowledge drivers for that device for Vista and I purposely
went through the motions on the Sony site, and what I learn from that and
your helpful info is reenfocement of my old adage that I've tried to apply
and many of us have testing Vista through the builds the last 16 months.

I take the attitude I can make the driver work, and I won't know until I
try. I avoid cds that come with devices like the plague particularly around
the time of what I'd call the advent of a new Windows OS (I'd apply the same
to Apple Macs) because those devices stay on shelves and in warehouses for a
while before they get onto stores and websites. So I go to a site to try to
find a driver that's reliable, often the manufacturer.

I'm finding though with Vista, you may find some manufacturers doing nothing
and have to go elsewhere or try the oldd drivers.

What I'd be interested in hearing from you and you didn't spell out though,
HD, is did you get older XP drivers from the Sony site to work because for
the OPs cam I couldn't find anything for Vista or X64 on the sony site.So
did you do what I have often done--I backup and manually set a restore point
and empirically try to get an older driver or an XP driver in via browsing
with the Update Driver wiz.

To date, I am able to get every device working, although my HP Scanjet 5300
(5 years old but does the job for me--not as nice as the spiffy blue tooths
and new ones of course HP has demoed at our computer club) tries to wrestle
with me a bit before I get it working and sometimes I have to reinstall it.

I'll continue to look. We hate seeing people put out good money for their
hardware particiularly cams and video devices with applications that play
such an important part of people's lives and have drawn so many people into
learning about PCs and Windows in the last few years

I love Sony hardware in general. HP also. They have done well for me, but
they make so much of it. Even that new hardware kid on the block Microsoft
is making some neat devices--lol but ole Allard didn't get the Zune working
with Vista --I know he has every build and probably some previews of
Blackcomb/Figi/Vienna alphas.

I heard HP had actual Vista drivers but I am betting not--let's see
tripping to HP:
http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/307885-0-0-225-121.htm

this sends me to still another HP URL

http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/307885-0-0-225-121.html#Printers

They tell me this:

HP Printers, Scanners, Digital Cameras and Projectors:

HP Ink and Laser printing products
HP is working to ensure customers will have the best experience with HP ink-
and laser-based single and multifunction products connected to PCs running
Windows Vista, including HP Photosmart, Deskjet, Officejet, LaserJet and
other HP printing products. Windows Vista-compatible HP ink- and laser-based
products will be available when the new operating system is released to the
public. HP is working with Microsoft to include drivers in the Microsoft
operating system for HP ink- and laser-based products introduced in recent
years. For additional information or more details on Windows Vista upgrades,
bookmark and re-visit this website often.

HP and Microsoft are working--that's really spiffy. MSFT at Redmond has been
working on Vista for 6-7 or more years during which time HP in Silicon
Valley has been working as a Platinum partner during that time.

I've lol revisited the website through every build of Vista since July 2005
and I've seen NADA produced as to Vista drivers for my scanner and printer.
I used workarounds for them both, learning a long time ago that cooperation
between MSFT and their platinum partners to get drivers for devices that
MSFT is happily selling on their MSFT Marketplace sites is about as fast as
trying to win a multi-state lottery.

There is a lot of talk all hat and no Cattle as they say in Redmond and
Kings County Washington, Queen Anne, and Silicon valley Calleeforney and
points near in Nor Cal.

I do find though that

"HP recommends Windows® XP Professional"

Windows XP, Windows XP that's the one before all this Vistamania isn't it?

I'm elated to find out that on 11/27/06 with 3 days for Vista to hit some
bricks and mortar stores in the US that HP also headquatered in the US in
Palo Alto has the technology and where withall to wire tap some of their
board members, but can't get their act together with Microsoft who has a
huge presence right down the street from HP to get drivers out for Vista.

Way to go girls and guys. Have another bunch of Vista release parties:

From what I have read and experienced trying XP drivers in Vista, I think
you should try them. Also there are driver lists all over the web and you
might want to ck out Andre de Costa's 64 bit forum or the MSFT public 64 bit
group for help.

www.extended64.com

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?hl=en&q=microsoft.public.64bit.general+&qt_s=Search

Only I hate the web interface for MSFT communities. It's vintage the 1600s.
So since you have winmail just accesss it with a search and a couple clicks.

You should strike gold there. Good luck.

Chad,

Vista (at least x64) has the hardware drivers already on the install disk
for the two Sony pieces I use. Was no reason to go to Sony's site. Since I
have Photoshop and Vegas to do editing with there's no reason for me to use
the software supplied with the cameras.

If I remember correctly though, Vista x86 had less functionality for my
camera than x64, e.g. I could only use the camera wizard under x86 but x64
would allow me to view the folders\images on the memory stick, move, copy
and delete. Been using x64 for so long now that I don't remember clearly.

With my Epson scanner and printer, I also lucked out that their XP64 drivers
and software worked perfectly fine under Vista64. My Adaptec HostRAID
adapter was possibly another lucky situation as both the 32 and 64 bit
drivers worked respectively. All of the USB readers embedded in my Dell
monitor are also recognized and work properly.

Even got my VX-6000 webcam to work with a little finesse and help from the
newsgroups.

All around I just found Vista64 better at hardware (which is totally
opposite of the normal *no 64 bit driver support bashing*) than it's 32 bit
sibling, besides I just hated the idea of not being able to use all 6GB of
RAM installed on this machine.
