cannot instal a new software.windows run at 16 bit
instead of 32 or 64 bit

Many CLIÉ handheld models are Windows® XP operating system compatible.
However, some of the earlier models may not have been initially setup for use
under the Windows® XP operating system and may require software updates
for use under the Windows® XP operating system. Please refer to the
model-specific information below.

Are you running command.exe instead of cmd.exe ?

cmd.exe is the 32 bit shell and should be what you use unless you know
why you need to be running in 16 bit mode.

FWIW I have an XP+SP1 system working with a Sony T615, which was
one of the early Clie models.

The last time I did a fresh installation of XP I got fed up with waht
Sony calls it's Support web site and just for grins downloaded the
latest desktop from the Palm site and it works fine.

It's Palm Desktop 4.1.
