Hello, My son has lost the original discs for Windows XP Pro. He bought a student version and he and I built his computer. He has the original package, and receipt and serial number and this is the same serial number as on his computer. Will Microsoft replace the disc for a fee or do I need to buy him a new disc? He wants to sell his computer and buy another one.
An academic license puts restrictions on what he can do. He may *not*
sell on the machine complete with OS; it must be cleaned off and it left
to the purchaser to buy his own OS. I am not even sure if he is
supposed to transfer it to a different machine, but the 25 character
product key he currently has used ought to work with a regular full XP
Pro CD if you have one around: I would certainly try that. Verify the
key - get the free Aida 32, enterprise edition from
http://www.aida32.hu/aida32-download.php
which is an excellent general System Info tool, and its Software -
Licenses page will tell you the one used for Windows and ones for
several other items. (that program is about to be discontinued, which
is a shame, but is available still for the moment)
