Sometimes a program just sits in the Task bar

I am running XP Pro with all the latest patches. I had a situation where 2
programs, Visio and Visual Studio would start up and I would see the splash
screen and then the program would just sit in the task bar and not display
on the screen. If I right clicked on the task bar and said maximize nothing
would appear on the desktop. Task Manager showed me though that they were
still running. So I would right click and close them. I uninstalled them
and reinstalled them and now everything is fine. But the same thing is
happening to Media Player 9. Whenever I start it, it just sits in the task
bar. I have tried reinstalling it and nothing. I can't get it to display
or play. I can use Media Player 2 but not the main one.
