any way to find out what is blocking pop ups on my system? zone alarm
is installed but even with the program disabled it still happens,
norton av installed but totally disabled, manual scan only, spybot
search and destroy installed but does nothing but it's scan only as
far as i know, cant think of anything else, its makes this double
beep sound and it says in the lower left of IE popup blocked and
sometimes the popup is something I need
In IE's options, do you have Javascript disabled?
Did you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 Release Candidate? Then you
volunteered to be a beta tester. From what I read of SP1 RC1, IE will
now have a popup blocker so my guess is that there is an option to
enable and disable it.
Do you have the Google Toolbar or Yahoo Companion installed. They have
popup blockers. Do you install the software on the computer on which
you are having the problem? If not, ask whomever administers that
computer as to what software is installed that includes popup blocking.
Go into the Sounds applet in Control Panel. See if you can find an
event that plays the double beep sound. It might identify who is
triggering the sound event.
I have Norton Antivirus 2003. It has no popup blocking feature.
However, it came bundled with Norton Internet Security 2003 which does
have a popup blocker under the Ad Blocking feature.
Since you have Spybot, it has a BHO (browser helper object) tool under
its Tools category. That will tell you what BHOs have been incorporated
into IE. Alternatively, you can use BHO Demon to see the BHOs and it
will also let you disable them rather than have to uninstall them.
Use msconfig.exe to disabled all startup programs, reboot, and see if
the popup blocking goes away. Some popup blockers, like PopUp Cop, only
run when IE gets loaded but some run continuously in the background and
this should stop them from loading. If the popup blocking goes away,
reenable each startup program one by one, doing a reboot after each, to
see when the popup blocking reappears. When it reappears, the last
program you reenabled is the culprit.
Many popup blockers will let you temporarily override them by holding
down on the Ctrl key while using the mouse to click on a link.
