Some Stupid Tweaks

R

rn5a

My brother had been to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm &
downloaded & executed many of the tweaks given there (gave him one
tight slap for tweaking my m/c.).

Now when I start my PC, I find that the drive names in 'My Computer'
are no longer visible. My brother told me that this happened after he
ran a VBS or REG file that he downloaded from the above site (he
doesn't remember the exact tweak).

Now can someone please tell me how do I make WinXP display the drive
names back in 'My Computer'?

Moreover, I don't even find icons like 'My Computer', 'Recycle Bin'
etc. on my desktop. This too happened after my brother ran a file from
the above site (& as usual, he doesn't remember the exact tweak). I did
like to restore those icons on the desktop as well.

Please suggest me how do I do so.

you can do a system restore, to a time before the tweaks were applied

start> all programs> accessories>system tools> system restore

I'm not agree about your title of the subjet....Many people create utilities
to help those with poor understanting how the system works...Kelly as well
many others did a great job...but the ignorance about ussing those tools
create the problem....Restore you system to a previus day

I've used several of Kelly's Tweaks. They have always worked well and saved
me trouble. Don't blame the hammer if you hit your thumb with it!

Well, guys, system restore didn't help me out. Neither did the TweakUi.
Any other suggestions, friends??

Milt, I guess both you & LFR must have contributed some tweaks in the
list given at that site which is why you 2 have strongly opposed me.
OK.....agreed that I am wrong but whatever tweaks are provided there,
shouldn't there be a corresponding "UNDO" tweak for each & every tweak?
Some of the tweaks have it but not all.

BTW, since you have tried several tweaks from that site, have you tried
out the ones that rename "Help and Support" & "Search" under the Start
menu? I have & both didn't work. I tried to rename the "Recycle Bin" &
that didn't work as well.

You are saying as if the site has given a detailed explanation on what
does each tweak do. It's quite obvious that people who have a poor
understanding on how the system works won't know what is a batch (.bat)
file. The 8th tweak at the site says "Release Renew Bat File". Now when
people don't know what is Bat, how will they understand what that does
or in what way will it affect one's PC? There are many such tweaks
listed whose title doesn't give any idea on what it would do. A few
more e.gs. being "Restore marscore.dll", "Remove JRE - SunTreatAs
Entry", "Restore Replace the Manage CLSID Default" etc....

Your first mistake is thinking that MickeyMouse's toy operating system can
be "tweaked" to start acting like a real operating system. You can't make a
silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Cheers.

That's right......I shouldn't have visited that site in the first
place...

The tweaks on Kelly's site are great when properly used.
Almost any tool can be misused with bad results and that says nothing about
the tool when improperly used.

"I shouldn't have visited"
Since you went there, you should know exactly which tweaks you used.
Many of her tweaks have an undo option with them.
Otherwise simply look at all the tweaks to determine which tweaks you used.

From there undoing them should be quite easy.

OK..I. find out which tweak caused that problem but it doesn't have its
corresponding undo tweak. So how do I undo that? How does one undo the
tweak for which there isn't any undo tweak available?
