Tweak toys for XP......?

J

justagirl

Hi,

I googled for Tweak ui and went to an m/s site where it described the toys available under the Tweak
utility...... but the one I really wanted wasnt there.

The one I want is the toy/app/tweak that gets rid of Shortcut-Arrows on the desktop.
I have it on my win98 comp and it works just fine,,, Q: does the Tweak ui for xp offer this?
does anyone know where I can get a utility to do this on XP?

thanks.

Okay,,, I d/loaded from the above site,, was only 147Kb and I have it stashed.
(I clicked on its properties, and cant see the difference tween it and the win98
version that I have already got......?)

Dont know why you sent me to the above site.... unless you thought I might want to go
and play in the registry,, trust me, I am justagirl and going into the reg' is not my ideal
way of spending time on computer; in other words, I'm smart enough to know I dont
know enough about the reg' to go 'adjusting' things.

The above site is the one I mentioned in my post,, and it says nothing about getting rid
of the shortcut arrows.....
I know I can do it in win98,, what I want to know is, is there an option in tweak to do
it in XP?

hello new poster...

The site you sent me to is also the same one I mentioned in my original post.... but, because you
posted the url, I went back there for another look; it still didnt mention anything about the
arrows, but out of curiosity, I 'tried' to download the Tweak gizmo, and no matter what link I
clicked on, I got the usual microsoft run-around.... I didnt even find the d/load page, even though
each link I clicked on promised me that I was going there...... I am used to microsofts
pages, and is why I truly try to stay away from them.

All that aside, the one I downloaded from the site that nass provided, is it the one I should be
using?
I am ready to place it onto my XP machine, but just want to know two things... 1)is it the XP
version, (also, is it in anyway different to the win98 version?) 2)does the win98 version do
exactly the same thing?

thanks

Once you do install the TweakUI, you will find a newer Program
"section" (Powertoys for Windows XP.) The, inside of TweakUI, under
the Explorer group, you will find the Shortcut "arrow" settings.

This TweakUi is very different than the Windows 98 version. You
should not use the 98 version as the Register versions have change
significantly.

Thank you Xandros and smlunatick......
I have d/loaded from the link Xandros gave,, and yet again stashed another .exe ready for use.
Thing is,, I find it strange that both of the versions of 'Tweak' I d/loaded tonight are exactly
the same size....... both being `147KB..... hmmmmm?

Anyway, I am now pooped, will do what has been said in the last two posts, and only use the one
Xandros pointed to.
Is funny how something so simple can turn into something else. I remember when I got tweak for my
98computer,, it was just so simple to do..... oh well, the world keeps on spinning anyway, no
matter what.

thanks all.

I don't know why you had trouble with the link I gave you. If you scroll
down the right side, TweakUI is clearly listed and clicking it starts the
download. The two versions of Tweak are totally different. The 98 version
created a control panel applet where the new version creates a start menu
entry. The old version of Tweak would not delete the shortcut arrow if your
W98 system updates were current (an update broke Tweaks ability to remove
the arrow). You cannot use the old version of Tweak on XP. The version you
downloaded from the link Xandros/Nass provided is the same one you would
have received if you clicked on Tweak on the link I provided.

I told you in my original post that the XP Tweak (under Explorer) would
remove the arrow. If you install the program, it will become clear what you
need to do--look under Explorer. Checking the properties of a file is
useless in trying to determine what a program will do.

The free Microsoft TweakUI will do this, and many other useful things,
for you.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (if you
have SP1 or SP2 installed) or
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
(if you don't have SP1 or SP2).

However, my recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The arrows
serve an important function--providing quick visual identification of
a shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk
that sooner or later you will delete something you wanted to keep,
thinking that you were just deleting a shortcut to it. I would either
leave the arrows as they are, or alternatively use the TweakUI option
of light arrows, which are somewhat less visible than the regular
ones.

Too conservative. PC users know the programs they run on a daily basis.
