some ridiculous site....

Some ridiculous site took over my pc and introduces icons onto the desktop
every time I boot up, and makes their own site my homepage. I change it all
and delete all the unwanted icons but they just reappear next time I switch
on. How can I stop this from happening?

Hi Stu

Try any/all of the following programs to check for and delete any spyware
that may be on your system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Try this:

1) Open up internet explorer, then go to TOOLS, OPTIONS, and delete all
cookies and all offline content.

2) Install and run Ad-Aware by Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

3) Check your Startup folder, make sure its empty (other than your
selections)
Check Control Panel ADD/REMOVE Programs for an entry from the culprit site.
Browse MY COMPUTER, C:\, PROGRAMS for a suspect folder and delete it.

4) Goto START RUN and type in MSCONFIG. Look for the suspect entries in the
STARTUP tab. Uncheck any found and note the path and file name. Then delete
any found files/folders.

5) Last (avoid this step if possible) go to START RUN and type in REGEDIT.
Use the find feature and type in any parts of the site name.

along with will's suggestions also try hijack this, note
its best to use all of them, some will pick up stuff the
others dont. dont run them at the same time this will
cause problem. run each seperately.
