some non-functioning keys

I find that many of my special keys - especially any that function with ALT,
like prt sc or break -- don't work. The delete key works, but scroll, pause &
insert don't. I have all software updates. I have a year-old Compaq laptop
with XP Professional 2002, service pack 3. Most everything else works fine.
Would appreciate advice.

Was that something recent or from a long?

What happen if you substitute with an external KB?
Does the keys looks loose to you?

Use the on-screen keyboard, which is included with Windows;

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen
Keyboard.

Try using that, if that doesn't work, get a usb keyboard.

Hope this helps
