Some jpg's won't display

V

Vic Baron

I'm having a problem with pix displaying in IE6. I have several images,
arranged in a javascript slideshow. All the images were large jpg files
which I resized ( using MS Image Resizer tool ) to 640x480x24b. They are
then uploaded to a website. When I view the page online, *some* of the pix
do not display, showing only the dreaded red 'x'. However, when I view the
page off-line, in Dreamweaver or Front-page - all the images display as
expected. Using various graphic programs to look at the pix, they all
display and all seem to have the same general properties - 640x480x24b. I
tried changing size on the problem images - no luck. Tried converting to
..gif files - same problem.

I have the site set as Trusted and if it were a security setting, NONE of
the images would display, correct?

I'm stumped! Has anyone seen anything like this before?

I'd appreciate any input!

Thanx,

Vic

V

additional info I've found out -

Images were taken on a Sony Digital camera and transferred to a MAC. Then
they were burned into a CD which is readable by my XP system. In looking at
the headers with a hex editor I noticed that all the images that displayed
had the same header format and all the images that did not display had a
different header format.

interesting sidenote - I placed the images in a folder on the website and
provided an individual link to each photo - all photos display as
expected! - But when they're loaded by a javascript slideshow application -
they fail.

Thoughts?

Thanx,

Vic Baron

Hi Vic :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Try clearing the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files (and
delete offline content.)

Go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Scroll down to Show Pictures -

Thanx, Jan but so far no joy :(

Did find out something tho from one of the links - in looking at the
properties of the images that Don't display - the type is unknown, the size
and resolution are correct but "date created" and "Date modified" are
unknown. The filename(s) are correct - they are all JPG files.

What is frustrating is that they ALL display in IE locally but when d/l from
a page, IE doesn't recognize *some* of them. If all were blank, I could go
with a bad driver, or some sort of firewall or setting.

If it were just the header, then why would it display locally?

Frustrating.

Think I need to find a graphics forum and see if there's some
incompatibility that I am unaware of.

Thanx,

Vic

Hi Vic :)

One more thing, and this is just a WAG, but, try reassociating them with the
program that you want to open them with, i.e., whatever program you use to
view/open the graphics with. It may be that they the 'type is unknown' may
be confusing something in the process. Maybe it's not really a
jpeg.

I have seen cases of this before, and it has happened to me a time or two,
and applying the right extension resolves the problem. Have you tried
downloading the file to your hard drive to see if it opens properly? If not,
what happens? Still blank? Get an error message? If so, what is the
message?

Hope this helps.

:) Tried reassociation too - no luck. Download file - looks fine :( - One
other thing - in investigating the properties of the images - all of those
that won't display - in the advanced summary area show the brand of the
camera, the format, the date picture taken and a bunch of other stuff. Other
pix that were taken with digital cameras just show image size and type, etc.
Just possible that the camera puts something in the file that causes a
problem?

Still strange thought that I can view them fine on my local machine, either
direct from the cd or copied to HD. If I upload and provide link and click
link - pix displays. But try to display in a javascript slideshow - nada.

One thing I haven't tried - embed the image directly into the web page and
see if it shows. If it does - maybe the java interaction on the web is the
issue - because it displays fine locally.

Frustrating!

Still frustrating!

Great news! Have you tried updating your javascript? Also, check the
information here, it may be that one type is more compatible with one type
of Javascript than another.

You have not mentioned the version of Windows you are using, but, you can
try the information below that fits.

You can update your scripting engine. The latest scripting engine can
be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

I'm having a problem with pix displaying in IE6. I have several
images, arranged in a javascript slideshow. All the images were large
jpg files which I resized ( using MS Image Resizer tool ) to
640x480x24b. They are then uploaded to a website. When I view the
page online, *some* of the pix do not display, showing only the
dreaded red 'x'. However, when I view the page off-line, in
Dreamweaver or Front-page - all the images display as expected. Using
various graphic programs to look at the pix, they all display and all
seem to have the same general properties - 640x480x24b. I tried
changing size on the problem images - no luck. Tried converting to
.gif files - same problem.

I have the site set as Trusted and if it were a security setting,
NONE of the images would display, correct?

I'm stumped! Has anyone seen anything like this before?

I'd appreciate any input!

Thanx,

Vic

Good news, in a way - directly embedded the image in the web page and it
displayed fine! Something about the javascript slideshow maybe causing
the problem. I had tried 4 different slideshows with the same results.
Have to dig into java a bit more I guess.

Still frustrating!

Great news! Have you tried updating your javascript? Also, check the
information here, it may be that one type is more compatible with one type
of Javascript than another.

You have not mentioned the version of Windows you are using, but, you can
try the information below that fits.

You can update your scripting engine. The latest scripting engine can
be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

One other thing - in investigating the properties of the images - all of
those that won't display - in the advanced summary area show the brand
of the camera, the format, the date picture taken and a bunch of other
stuff. Other pix that were taken with digital cameras just show image
size and type, etc. Just possible that the camera puts something in the
file that causes a problem?

Still strange thought that I can view them fine on my local machine,
either direct from the cd or copied to HD. If I upload and provide link
and click link - pix displays. But try to display in a javascript
slideshow - nada.

One thing I haven't tried - embed the image directly into the web page
and see if it shows. If it does - maybe the java interaction on the web
is the issue - because it displays fine locally.

Frustrating!

Doncha just LOVE computers on some days??? :)

Hi Vic :)

One more thing, and this is just a WAG, but, try reassociating them
with the program that you want to open them with, i.e., whatever
program you use to view/open the graphics with. It may be that they
the 'type is unknown' may be confusing something in the process. Maybe
it's not really a
jpeg.

I have seen cases of this before, and it has happened to me a time or
two, and applying the right extension resolves the problem. Have you
tried downloading the file to your hard drive to see if it opens
properly? If not, what happens? Still blank? Get an error message? If
so, what is the message?

Hope this helps.

Thanx, Jan but so far no joy :(

Did find out something tho from one of the links - in looking at the
properties of the images that Don't display - the type is unknown, the
size and resolution are correct but "date created" and "Date modified"
are unknown. The filename(s) are correct - they are all JPG files.

What is frustrating is that they ALL display in IE locally but when
d/l from a page, IE doesn't recognize *some* of them. If all were
blank, I could go with a bad driver, or some sort of firewall or
setting.

If it were just the header, then why would it display locally?

Frustrating.

Think I need to find a graphics forum and see if there's some
incompatibility that I am unaware of.

Thanx,

Vic

Hi Vic :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Try clearing the IE cache. I.E./Tools/Options/General/Delete files
(and
delete offline content.)
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Go to Internet Options>Advanced Tab
Scroll down to Show Pictures -
Check the box if unchecked to display pictures all the time.

Also...update your video driver. If you don't know the location of
your Video driver, or how to find it:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/games/learnmore/updatingdrivers.mspx
or......
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314854
Find the information on your video driver. Then go to the website
for mfg. of the video driver and look for the update to download and
install. There may also be a Update Driver button on the dialog box
you can use to go direct to the update download site.

and..
