Some Groups missing?

D

Dennis Crandall

Using windows Vista Windows mail, after receiving a full listing of available groups on bellsouth.net and giganews, I cannot subscirbe to alt.binaries.food. I know the group is there on the servers but it is not showing up in the list of available groups. Using any other client, I can find and subscribe to this group.

What is Windows Mail doing to this list of available newsgroups that is munging it up?

Thanks

Dennis

It's not Windows Mail. Some news servers filter the alt and alt.binaries
groups. Find a news service that does not filter.

Please explain "filter".

I can assure you that the groups at bellsouth.net are not "filtered"
in any way.

Regardless, Windows Mail does not censor or filter newsgroups either.

I was not saying that it does. I am trying to figure out why a particular
group does not appear in the list for Windows Mail but does every other
client that I install on the same PC and download the same list of groups
from the same set of newsgroup servers.

When I download all of the groups from the server using Windows Mail,
alt.binaries.food is literally not in the list. But when I do the same
exercise using XNews or Thunderbird, the group is in the list.

This is leading me to believe that the problem lies with Windows Mail since
it is the only difference.

I don't know why it doesn't show up, but I can verify that it doesn't show
up in Windows Mail or in Windows Live Mail. I tried 2 servers, Giganews.com
and Adelphia.net

a.b.f does show up using Agent 4.2

As a test, I just started a new news account in WLM, and it
downloaded about 37,000 newsgroups. Alt.binaries.food was
definitely there. The server I use is news.prodigy.net.

Is there a diff between Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail?

I'll check your test on our lab machine on Monday. Thanks for the input.

A difference as far as newsgroup performance? Not that I've noticed.

Nah, I meant are they different programs? Given your answer I would have
to surmise that they are.

Thanks!

They certainly are different programs. WLM runs on both XP and Vista.
It is still in beta, but in my opinion is more stable than WM.
Quite a few WM bugs have been fixed already in WLM. Unlike WM,
it also works with Hotmail accounts.

Okay, thanks for the information. I'll do a few more tests and if I
cannot get the group, I'll submit a bug to Microsoft.

My prefered reader is slrn, but I have customers who use Microsoft
products religiously.

The following steps are a temporary work-around for this bug, which we have submitted to Microsoft;

1) Remove newsgroups account from WindowsMail.
2) Remake your newsgroup accouont in Windows Mail.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE LIST OF GROUPS!
3) Click on Start, then Run.
4) In the text box, type: news://addressof.your.newsISP/alt.binaries.food and hit enter.
(This will open up the group in Windows Mail.)
5) Right-click on the groupname in the left panel, then left-click on Subscibe in the dropdown menu.
6) Repeat steps 3 -5 for any other groups that you have this same problem with.
7) Now you can download the list from the server and proceed like normal.

Again, this is a temporary fix until Microsoft fixes the bug.
