some, but not all, programs can connect to the internet

I've quite a quandary.
Running Windows XP, SP2 and only some of my programs are currently able
to connect to the internet over our home DSL connection.
My virus software can contact its server for updates, & I can run
Mailwasher to clean files off my mail server.
However, Firefox, IE, & Thunderbird all "Cannot Connect" to any servers
anywhere?!

I uninstalled/reinstalled the NIC drivers & the network card seems to
be working properly.
Windows firewall is on, with exceptions, & I've made sure that the
programs above are added to the exception list. That didn't help,
either.
I also hooked up USB wireless adapter, since I have a wireless DSL
modem, and that gave the same results.

That makes me think that there is something going on in the operating
system, & not just the network setup.

Is it possible to reset Windows internet connection defaults somewhere?

I'm open to any & all suggestions, including other usegroups that may
be better suited to answer the question if no one here knows.

Thanks!

The updates MAY not need DNS, but I know the browsers do for most of
their access. Please try the following.

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

Hey Joe,
I ran the netsh command, and received a message that "The Helper file
DGNET.DLL could not be loaded".
dgnet.dll is in the system32 folder, so it's there, but something is
wrong/corrupt... .

The other utilities didn't fix the issue either.

Tomorrow may be a re-install the OS day!

Try this one then:

http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/WinsockXPFix.exe - Winsock repair
utility designed for Windows XP.

Or try the following, then the lspfix program again.

Click Start, Run, type SFC /SCANNOW, click OK. If any files are damaged
or missing, they'll be replaced. You may need to reboot afterwards so
damaged files will be replaced.
