Some advice need please

Hi all,

I am trying to help a friend who has porn which attaches itself to emails
she receives with attachments from her sister, two other friends and me.
When we send an email with a picture embedded in the email or with an
attachment, if she presses Enter, the 'file viewer' (I think that's what it
is called) opens and she can see porn pictures plus others such as banners,
and arrows as used in websites.

If she returns to exact same email to me or the others, there is no porn and
other pictures (We don't want to see the porn anyway)

We all update our antivirus daily, and I have actually run a full scan on
both her computer and mine and nothing shows. I have also run Adaware on
both computers and still nothing. The only thing I haven't tried is a
program called Secretmaker which I use. I also use Mailwasher to vet my
emails before downloading them and she does not.

Is there someone on this group or does someone know where I could go for
advice please.

Has she got her email client (whatever it is) set to view emails as HTML? If
so, you should be able to change it to views emails as text only.

Are you saying that material is being added to emails that you send her
(so that if you send her a picture of a dog the picture is of something
else when she gets it)? Or that emails are arriving in her mailbox which
say they come from you but which you did not send?

Hi Andy,

No, I'm saying that she gets the email I send of the dog, but if she presses
Enter once she has opened the attachment, the "File Viewer" (Not sure
correct name) opens and by pressing Enter again, the porn and the banners
etc. are viewable.

Also, the emails are from me, her sister and friend - I went around to her
house after I had sent a test email to her and sure enough the crap was
there.

It doesn't matter if the picture I send is embedded in the email, it arrives
on her computer as an attachment and that's where the problems start. In
fact any attachment does this.

Will changing the format to receive emails as Clive suggests from HTML to
view emails as text only?

Many thanks for your response, it sure is appreciated.

Regards,

Di

Only viewing the emails as text will stop the hyperlinks within it
working, and should stop any content embeded in the email activating - I
reckon that its always best to view emails as text only myself.

The only thing that worries me is that this may only stop the 'effect'
not tackle the underlying cause! You say that you have run adaware on
the machine and that your anti-virus is up to date? Try one of the other
anti-spyware tools out there too - no harm in trying defence in depth.

Hi Andy,
Thanks once again for your response.
We can change to viewing the emails as text only but her husband receives
some plans and other drawings as attachments so addressing the underlying
cause is a necessity.

I am going to strongly advise they install Secretmaker and Spybot Search &
Destroy.

I was told today by their son, that they have a firewall - so will have to
check out
her computer thoroughly.

Have a great weekend.
Regards,
Di
