Solved regsvr32.exe vbscript.dll prob with Outlook 2000

Hi,

I've found literally hundreds of similar problem reports on the web, and
thought my solution might interest someone:

After reinstalling my system (Win98 SE) and Office (2000 Prem. with all
SPs) I found that Outlook wouldn't start anymore. The error I got was
similar to that one (though mine came in German):

"Failed to register a VB Script DLL. Reinstall or run Regsvr32.exe
Vbscript.dll to self register. The key "DisplayName" is either missing
or has an incorrect value. [File
e:\Programme\Office2000\Office\forms\1031\SIGN.CFG, Section Description]
"

I've tried nearly every tip I found on the web for nearly a day:
1. Solution offered by
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;271141
2. Un- and reinstall of Outlook, also with 'start from CD' and ' install
when first used' options
3. Thorough reg-cleanup with Vuori's jv16 powertools

Following several hints on the web, I finally renamed that file
mentioned in the error msg, sign.cfg to sign.cf_ (so practically
removing it). This did the trick, no problems encountered sofar.

I've seen mention of this error in slight variations from people using
Win 2k, Win XP and/or Outlook 2000 & 2002. So this might be a common
thing - with no official solution from MS ;-((.

Hope this helps

TB
