Just thought I'd put this out there for people looking for help with
DPC consuming gobs of cpu, especially since external hd's are becoming
more commonplace.
So, if you do have an external hard drive and DPC is running wild,
here's what to do.
1. In My Computer, open the properties of your external hd.
2. Under the hardware tab, double-click the named entry for the
external hd to view its device properties. It's not as obvious as the
name of the entry in My Computer. My 200GB drive that I labeled
"deuce" shows up here as "WDC WD20 00JB-00EVA0 USB Device" amidst a
list with all of my drives (primary hd, sd card, ipod, printer's card
slots, cd, fantom drive...).
3. Under the policies tab, switch to "Optimize for performance." Read
the little warning so you'll know to make sure to unmount the drive via
the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon when you want to disconnect the
drive.
HTH.
