Solution for 2nd Window Freeze (windows98)

I have been trying for several days to fix my problem with
IE hanging when opening a 2nd window - which just started
several days ago. I tried IEFIX and the suggestions in the
Knowledge base article with no effect. Then I decided to
check my laptop, which also runs IE6SP1 (with all updates)
on Windows 98. This worked fine, so I compared all of the
7 DLLs mentioned in the knowledge base article. Only one:
OLEAUT32.DLL was different. The one on the computer which
worked was dated 5/3/02 929,792 bytes; the other, dated
9/9/02 was 569,344 (both in WINDOWS\SYSTEM). When I
replaced the 9/9/02 version with the 5/3/02 version, the
windows now open & function perfectly. So - check in your
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for OLEAUT32.DLL and check the
size and date. This might be a fixable problem for those
with windows 98.

Yes. Both machines are up to date with Windows updates. In
thinking back over possible causes of one computer having
a different OLEAUT32.DLL file, I remembered that I had
installed (then deleted) several shareware programs for
backing up my larger hard drive (Veritas Backup is limited
in capacity). I looked at the text in the DLL file and it
said "This version of oleaut32.dll is fully functional
only in Windows 2000 and higher" - so, one of the programs
must have installed it, then not removed it.
The version that works is 2.40.4518. The version that
didn't was 3.50.5016 .
This may not be a solution for eveybody's problem, but
it made the most sense (espeially when working fine became
hanging up) - my experience is that it's usually due to
one corrupted or changed file.
