Try running the Update Driver wizard using the Update Driver button, but do
not let Windows 2000 automatically detect devices. Instead, click Have Disk
when prompted, and manually point the wizard to the appropriate driver.

When I go to My Computer|Device Manager and click on the Properties tab for
my Maxtor 200 GB external drive, the General tab tells me that there are no
drivers installed. However, if I click on the Driver tab, it displays the
Maxtor driver that was being used heretofore.

I tried the route of forcing the addition of drivers from the Maxtor cd and,
after installing, the system comes back with the standard "you must restart
your computer for this driver to become effective." This I did, but I end
up with the same condition as before!

Recently, I downloaded from Maxtor the drivers for their product, but for
the Vista platform that my laptop uses. My Maxtor worked fine in that
environment. I am assuming that there should be no change made to the
external drive itself that would preclude it from running on a Windows 2000
platform? If the Safe mode accepts a flash drive, I don't know why it
wouldn't accept an external storage device, such as the Maxtor.

Since I don't use my D drive (20 GB, vs. 200 GB for the C), I'm tempted to
format it (if this can be done in the Safe mode), and to copy my C drive
data over to it. (I did try highlighting the C:\ in Windows Explorer with
the intent of copying most of my data to a 16 GB flash drive, but the system
would not accept that command, although I could highlight individual
folders, and copy them over.)

Very strange.

Strange..... the system recognizes a flash drive, but not the external
hard drive. In checking, the system says that there is no driver
installed (but the external hard drive had worked previously), But, when
I go to install a driver (Add Hardware), I'm told that there is one
already installed. What did I do with my slide rule...
