Software problems

I have a problem trying to open a file when I am in Word or Excel. I click on
the "open file" icon and it brings up the list,

I double click on a folder to open so I can get a file from that folder the
hour glass shows and doesn't stop. Then it says that the program is not
responding.

I did the disk cleanup, defrag, tried to restore to prior date, (won't let
me). Any one have suggestions on how to fix this problem.
