Software installation problem

I am attempting to load Norton antivirus 2003. It goes
through the initial screens to the point of actually
loading the files then shuts down completely after giving
a brief error message (1704). It appears it may be
something in the install wizard but I am not sure. I had
a preloaded version of Norton which also would not
UNINSTALL. To do this I had to do it manually per
symantec technical support instruction. Any ideas...thanks
 
Please contact norton for support with thier products. This newsgroup is
for help with Windows XP and other Microsoft Products.
