Software distribution Service 3.0 shutdown problem

Hi All,

I recently switched to DSL, on the same day two entries were made in system
restore for SDS 3.0. Since that day, my computer will not shut down. I have
to keep restoring it to the checkpoint made before the updates. I cannot
find the updates in add/remove programs to uninstall them. Any ideas? I
have done alot of research on SDS 3.0 on the web and it seems alot of
problems are being caused by SDS 3.0. I have turned off automatic updates,
but it doesn't stay turned off. I'm baffled...

Go to Start > Run > copy and paste this into the Open: line

%windir%\softwaredistribution\reportingevents.log

Scroll down towards the bottom and locate the date that the Software
Distibution Service 3.0 restore point was created in Sys Restore.
The ReportingEvents.log will show which updates installed that day.
Post back with the KB number or description of the updates, please.

Thanks for the info.
My system checkpoint was at 1:47 pm (the one I use to restore)on 9/21
The following updates were made at 8:11 and 8:27 pm:
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation tool- KB892130
Microsoft net framework 1.1 - SP 1
Windows Media Player 11
Root Certificate update (no number with it)

Something is glitching my shutdown....Any help is appreciated....

In the Add/Remove Programs window, is the box checked at the top to
'Show updates ' ?
I'm unsure of the Root Cert update showing in ARP but, WMP11 *should* be
listed and the WGA update would be listed under ' Windows XP - Software
updates '
The .NET Framework update should be listed right after Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1

Is AntiVir the installed antivirus software ?

Show updates is checked. Net framework 1.1, Windows media player 11, and
Microsoft Validation tool (KB892130) installed on 12/21/06 were there when I
checked before.

Today, however, Microsoft Validation tool is showing it was installed on
9/22/07 and Hotfix for Windows XP (KB926239) has popped up installed on
9/22/07. According to the Events log, all of the above was installed on
9/21/07 successfully.

Also my events log only goes back to 4/3/07. Why is that? Do I have to
allocate more space?

Are there any updates for .NET Framework 1.1 listed *directly*
underneath it ?

As to KB926239, please see this:
Windows Media Player 10 may close unexpectedly on a Windows XP-based
computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926239

Now, is the system shutting down now without holding in the power
button ?

The Event logs are set to 512 KB by Default. If you need them to be
larger, than open Computer Management or, go to Start > Run > type in
eventvwr.msc
Click OK or press Enter
Rght click the event log you need to be larger, and choose Properties
or, click on the one you need larger, click Action > Properties.

Question: Why do you need the Event logs to be larger ?

Sorry it took me so long.
Yes, there was an update for .Net Framework 1.1. I uninstalled that first,
then Net Framework, then KB926239. The computer will now shut down via the
start menu.
I am running AVG virus program.
I will keep automatic updates off.
I deeply appreciate your prompt response and your help...
