So when are you Linux crybabies going to put up a www.boycottdell site
like you
have already done with Novell?

You morons just don't get it do you?

Linux doesn't sell.
Companies need to make money to survive,
If Dell thought it could make big money with Linux it would, but there
is no doubt it has studied this
inside and out and has reached the conclusion that supporting Linux
via their helpdesk is going to
cost far more than the piddling number of machines they might sell
loaded with Linux.

Walmart discovered the same thing.
A year ago they offered close to 10 different Linux loaded PC's on
their website.
Now they have one aging model left to choose and I'll bet that one is
gone shortly.

Lenovo is learning the same thing.
Sure they talk about loading Linux.
Now try and find information about Linux on their websites.
It's buried 10 frames down.
Why?
Because the valuable advertising space is taken up by Windows
machines, which sell and
pay the companies bills.

For a group of people that claim Linux and Open Source brings freedom
you sure have a nasty side to you.

I guess the freedom only comes if one follows the Open Source / Linux
bouncing ball and does everything the way
the Linux community wants it to be done.

And when one doesn't follow the Linux rules of engagement totally,
then the Linux community turns
on that person or company like some kind of a rabid rat that has been
cornered.

The problem isn't really Linux so much, the problem is the Linux
community at large which seems to
be composed of a bunch of unstable, back stabbing people.

So when do you jerks start your boycott of Dell because their Linux
support is lukewarm?

I suppose it's evil for a company to make money these days huh?

I wonder how many of you Linux zealots make your living with Windows
by day and spew your religious Linux crap by night.

You have at least one idiot in comp.os.linux.advocacy that is
literally sitting at the computer posting 24 hours a day and 7 days a
week.
And you don't think someon is paying him?
You're fools if you don't.

So when does the boycott Dell campaign begin?

I dunno - when do you want to start?

And the Cg extensions? Work on ATI HW too? If so this is all good news
since effort used on PS3 games *might* be then used on PCs. But I doubt
it? Why? I bet Sony has the developers license as tight as a Ducks ass.
Time will tell.

Yes, works on both nVidia and ATI Hardware as long as the driver supports it
of course. Same deal really as with DirectX.

so far both ATI and nVidia have always supported OpenGL to its latest
specifications.

And Sony is irrelevant. They can sew that duck's ass as tight as they
want...it is irrelevant in this case as these APIs are open to everyone and
not part of Sony.

Until Linux gets its act together with full and complete DX9-DX10
compatability and video drivers which work out of the box for both
nvidia AND ATI cards then the general public wont buy it. People want
PCs to play games on, and I'm afraid Quake, Unreal Tournament and Frozen
Bubble don't quite cut it anymore.

An interesting concept. Is anyone working on DX10
standardization? Even such a crappy, half-assed effort as
the so-called "Open Document" format which is supposedly
going to replace PDF would be a help for game developers.

Assuming, of course, that it's worth doing for game
developers at all; good game developers layerize their
systems as a matter of course.

Look closely at the Unreal.ini file, for example, and
you'll see a pluggable game engine. I don't know the
details but I also have Unreal Tournament (not 2000;
that has a different engine) running through a rather
unusual environment -- it's not WinE -- and it runs
reasonably well, though compared to UT2004 it's a bit
crude looking.

I've actually gotten UT2004 to work on Linux without Wine, and
also under FreeBSD with Linux binary emulation enabled. Do yourself
a favor and see how your favorite Linux games work under FreeBSD.
You may be in for a very pleasant surprise.

I'll admit I'm tempted. I've cleared off a disc for
experimental purposes but burning the boot-only 24MB disc
resulted in what looks like a coaster. Why, I dunno.

I'm kinda hoping I can get things to work using QEMU, though.
QEMU does try to boot, though it's a bit sluggish.

I think you miss the point in that it is not impossible that Sony might
say "ok, you write for our HW and we support you, but we dont want that
on the PC or the XBox360". MS style!

The only game I am playing at the moment is the original Unreal through
WINE and it works great. (I couldnt follow half of the buggy
walkthroughs on how to get unreal working with UTs opengl driver on
Linux). Why the only game? Because I can honestly say that now my Ubuntu
system is solid, working with dual screen and talking to my sound card
(at last) then I have no need of XP anymore for anything other than
gaming. And frankly, I cant be arsed rebooting to windows for a 20
minute frag fest.

Welcome to the Unix-Like world. One day you'll give FreeBSD a try, and
then you'll finally get your cookie.

I used Unix years ago - working on simulations in ADA. No,
really. I moved to Linux a year ago - hellish after XP for a
while. Despite what people say, I found XP stable, well supported with a
host of good tools. Moving to Linux was painful. But I'm glad I stuck
with it.
Now, I'll say this: Despising them both almost equally, I can say
that Ubuntu is far and away a better operating system than Windows
Vista, in every sense. From hardware support, to general stability,
to speed, to its ability to play games, it beats Vista at every
single turn.

That makes me happy, even though I still hate it.

TBH, I don't see much difference in most of the distros save what HW
they support and what they install by default. You know my views on too
many distros I am sure.

The only case where I can think of that Sony can legally and rightfully do
so is if a developer is making game with content licensed to Sony. At that
point in time, Sony has ownership of game content and can dictate what
platforms it is allowed to run on.

Quite a few of the major console game developers also do PC games as well.
Think of EA as one example. I don't think EA would throw away a substantial
portion of their market segment just to please Sony.

And honestly, I actually don't see it happening. If Sony really was
interested in preventing developers from selling their games on both the
PS3 and the PC then I don't think they would chosen the development
environment they have.

If you look at the game development sections on Wikipedia, most of
everything the PS3 uses comes straight from the PC!

all now dual booting, all swearing that Linux is crap but all are
sticking with it as I assured them the time spent in the early days
getting it working will make the experience all the sweeter a month or
so down the line when their systems are rock solid.

What I don't understand is why Linux supporters spend so much time here on
the Vista boards? I've tried Linux and didn't care for it but I'm not going
to spend hours to convince Linux users to switch to Vista cause I think its
better. Find something better to do....like trying to make your OS "rock
solid" after while.

XP, yes, Vista, absolutely NOT a "soild system right out of the box."
Anything but given all it's problems.
