Smartdrive error

S

smartdrive

On boot I get a Smartdrive imminent hard disk failure
error. It says Attribute #5 failed.. Anyone know what
attribute #5 is and what type of imminent failure I may be
looking at???? I go ahead and press F1 to continue the
boot and everything works OK...

I'm a little confused here, a smartdrive is something
that is created by a boot disk and since you mention
nothing about one I am disregarding that info. Imminent
failure failure of a HARDDISK (which is a valid error)
means that your harddrive is about to die. I suggest you
back up your personal data and get a replacement. If
this is truly a SMARTDRIVE error then that would be
referring to RAM, but it makes absolutely no sense.

SMART attribute #5: Reallocated Sector Coun

Reallocated Sector Count Indicates amount of remapped sectors. If the sector became bad for some reason then the drive replaces it with a spare sector from a special spare area on your drive

You need to backup your data and replace your harddrive before your old one fails

SMART is some kind of disk monitoring facility AIUI. So its a perfectly
valid error message and as the others have said, it likely means the OPs
disk is about to fail.

S M A R T (not smartdrive which is an old DOS program) is the drive's
own self monitoring. It is reckoning it is about to fail in a big way.
It is probably right. Back up all your data before doing anything then
go to the drive maker's site and see if they have a more extensive
diagnostic program. And I hope it is still in warranty

I get the same error but I cannot locate the windows directory or program files directory on my failing hard drive. I need to make a copy of one file but cannot find these directories. Any idea? I also cannot boot up to Windows as it fails out and computer reboots. It is a Compaq that comes preinstalled with WinXP and only has a recovery disk that does not work either.
