Boot warning

Following the recent use of an IEEE connection, the following message appears
each time I boot the computer:

Smart failure predicted on primary master WDC WD10000BB22CCBO
Immediatley backup your data and replace youor hard disk drive. A failure
may be imminent.

I then have a choice of clicking F2 to resume setup or F1 to go to BIOS
settings. Continuing the boot so far has not resulted in any problems.

Why is this happening and can I correct whatever is causing it.

Thanks

It is a SMART error, warning you that your hard is failing. It is warning
you.

Look at your event viewer for warning as well.

start>run and type

eventvwr

then select system in the left hand pane

You can correct the problem by quickly backing up all your important
information to a secure, off-drive site. Then you can sit back and wait for
the drive to fail - OR - you can replace the drive now.

I have personally never seen one of those messages (I have seen 10-15 on
various computers) where the drive didn't quickly fail.

How does this happen and does this mean I cannot correct the problem and that
the computer is about to "crash"?

You cannot correct this problem. It may not fail for long time or it might
fail tomorrow.

If you are connecting other devices to your hard drive(s) like fans, you
should not do this. Your PSU maybe underpowered.

Backup the system now. Download a hard drive diagnostic utility from
the drive manufacturer's web site. This will usually create a bootable
floppy disk. Run the diagnostics from there. Probably need to replace
the drive.

:

A drive is a mechanical and electronic device. Things fail and no this
probably can't be corrected.

I would run WD diagnostics and if it shows nothing then disable SMART in the
BIOS.

It means that your hard drive has a serious problem and is about to
fail completely.

Backup all of your important data and then run, not walk, to the
nearest computer supply store and get a new hard drive and install it.

Good luck
