Computer Hard Drive Failure Warning?

C

Hi:

I have a friend who had this warning pop up on their desktop screen:

Smart.Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: WDC WD 450AA-OOBAAO-(PM)
Warning Immediately back up your data and replace hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.
Press F1 to continue.

Is this a legitimate warning of a hard drive about to fail?

Thanks

Hi,

Absolutely, backup important files immediately, and be prepared to replace
it. If the system or drive is under warranty, contact the manufacturer NOW.
You can check the drive with a diagnostic utility, but a SMART failure
warning is rarely wrong.

You can double check that by going to wdc web,support,downloads,1st try the
on-line diagnostic software, then you might try the data lifeguard diagnostics
for DOS.Either way,they havent made a 450AA in a long time,its probably
in the worn-out stage.

I have never personally seen a drive that gave this failure warning "NOT"
fail. They usually fail shortly after the warning is received. In fact, some
times they fail upon the very next boot!
