Smart Taags versus Auto Text in Word 2003

In Word 2003 auto text would appear in hover when you typed a word that it
recognized. How do you apply smart tags in Word 2007 to do the same. I know
it shows a wavy line when it recognizes it but I want it to automatically
insert when I start typing the word.

You don't :-(.

Word2007 still has an AutoText feature. It is a category the new QuickParts
feature. Supposedly the autocomplete tip feature of AutoText conflicted
with some of the new QuickPart features and to the sore dissapointment of
many MS choose to eliminate it.

Now you type the first four or more unique characters and reach up and press
F3.

Also note that if the AutoText entries are just text, formatted or
unformatted, you can make use of AutoCorrect instead.

I noted from others as well as you that one must type at least the
first four characters to "call up" an Autotext entry. That isn't what I
find on Word 2007 with Windows XP: Any number, even just one, works as
long as it is unique.

Hi C.,

To add to the other replies Smart Tags and AutoText are separate features. Smart Tags are available in both Word 2003 and Word 2007
to tie text in your Word document to (hopefully) related information (for example typing in a Name lets you link to the address
book, typing in a stock symbol to the current stock price, etc). The information 'bubble' for Smart Tags still works in Word 2007,
but, as mentioned autocomplete of Autotext items via 'hints' does not. :(

Autotext in Word 2003 has become part of a larger 'document building blocks' feature set used across Office 2007 apps, accessed
through the 'Quick Parts' option on the Ribbon. Basically enhanced 'boiler plate' storage.

There are 3rd party keyboard macro tools that 'hover' to watch for specific text to insert stored items as you type, that work
across Word and other apps, but would make sharing autotext a bit more bothersome

Autocorrect can hold just about anything that autotext can store - not
merely text.

Graham,

True. The only proplem with AutoCorrect is that the formatted entries are
stored in my Normal.Dot regardless of the template used to create the
document. If preparing a template for use by other people on other
computers it loses its merits :-(
