Hello George,
If your using Norton Partition Magic 8.0, I might suggest you boot your
system from the Partition Magic installation CD to reduce the size of
Partition 1.
This way the OS is not running while data and partitions are being moved
around. The user guide that came with PM8.0 should explain how to do this.
Or better yet, check the CD for a more complete user guide in pdf format.
Print the pages of interest before you begin.
One other thing. You might consider defragging and cleaning up abit using
the Windows (XP) built in utilities or other programs you might have
installed.
Defragging by itself should move all data to the front of the drive anyway,
therefore PM8.0 will not need to move data, only restructure the partition
barrier and table. With this approach, PM8.0 might get the job done in just
a few minutes. I've never seen an XP installation that used less that 6GB.
With factory installed software this might approach 8-10GB. So please allow
for future growth and breathing room on drive C:\. I prefer about 20GB.
Once you have reduced the size of C:\ using PM8.0, Boot the system to
confirm all things are well, open Windows Computer Manager to confirm the
size of C:\ is as expected. If so, you could use Windows Computer Manager to
create a Basic or Extended partition to utilize the remaining disk space.
Then fill the extended partition with Logical Drives to suite your needs.
Format for NTFS or FAT32 if you prefer.
I went thru the same thing about a year ago with a DELL system and a 160GB
HD.
I bought PM8.0 and used it the way I described above. Worked like a champ
for me, quite pleased with how simple it was.
I never did install the PM8.0 software. It did what I bought it to do.
Still sittin' in a box on the shelf.
Hope this is helpful!
Best regards,
Richard in Va.
