Small Form factor

I've been considering building a small micro-ATX based pc for DVd, media etc, but my last experience of Micro ATX motherboards was that they were slow to boot up and it was difficult to get low-profile expansion cards etc.

Is anyone up to date with this stuff? Anyone got any recommendations for case, motherboard etc?
