slow

due to lack of reply in the general newsgroup i hoped to
find a solution here.

Dear,
recently my secondary PC started going VERY slow.
The computer boots slower than normal,
then the windows screen pops up and it takes AGES to load
upto the point where one choses a profile. The profiles
are also no longer displayed as before in the blue
background, instead suddenly i get a dialog in which you
can type your login and pasw. in this case it's just the
profile's name.
The computer then contniues to load but EXTREMELY slow,
all the while(from bootup) i notice the hard drive
(internal n°1) makes it's usual noise, BUT it's got alot
of 'pauses' in between like
Rrrrrrrrttttt...zzzzzzzzzz...rrtttttt....zzzzz where the
rrrttt = moment of activity and zzzz=silence.
PLease help me,
Greetings

Sounds like a bunch of rereads or even rewrites...go to
the event viewer and look for "red x" errors
involving "disk" "ide" or "atapi"; see if you have disk
errors involving a bad block. It is possible that a bad
sector has developed - and possible that a disk scan which
includes mapping out bad block can correct the problem
(I've seen it done). If however there are lots of bad
blocks or they increase in number over the near future the
hard drive itself may be ready to dive. In any case, as
long as you have access to it right now, BACK IT UP...
