Slow Windows XP Por start up

I have a new Sony Vaio PCG-GRT40ZP which has a Hitachi
DK23FA-80 hard drive. When the machine is cold (turned off
for several hours)it takes a long time to boot up -
sometimes up to 10 minutes. Once it has been up and
running and warm it will start up and shut down with no
porblem. The cold start problem also has the hard drive
making a lot of ticking noises that sounds like it is
stuck in a 'loop'.
I have run CHKDSK and defraged the drive. I have installed
Norton Utilities and apart from the annoying long start
up, it is running brilliantly.
Is there a driver update out there that can help or do I
have a hard drive that doesn't like the cold?
