Slow when "Applying Computer Settings" after logon to XP

Desktop appears 2 minutes after login on to XP. I know
the slowness is attributed to the User policies being
applied at logon because if I don't assign the policies to
the domain account, the logon process runs smoothly.

Microsoft released a patch for a similar behavior but it
did not work for me.

Any suggestions you may have would be very much

btw, just in case you're wondering, DNS is configured
properly and you can ping any machine by FQDN.

to see if it helps. It did for me on couple of occasions.
