Slow Logon

B

Barabba

Hi all

I'm having a strange behavior on my W2K AD

Clients: 200 Win XP Sp1 and W2000, sms client installed, office scan
installed
Servers
2 DC W2K Sp4, 1 SMS (not used)

when User A tries to logon, the logon process is slow. The profile is
donwloaded quickly, but the computer hangs while the Box "Appliyng your
policies settings" appears, for 1 or 2 minutes
If during the day the user logon again, there're no problems, even if the pc
gets rebooted.
The problem appears again, in the same day, if the user logs on to another
workstation

tried dcdiag on the server
gpotool
verified DNS registration of SRV records and client resolution using DNS

any suggestion?

TIA

Not sure if this will help but I sometimes have the same
problem (XP machine - logging into to AD). When I finally
get logged in and pull up MMC, I am unable to view
anything. A get some message about an error connecting to
the Domain ..etc.. (the error message is useless..)

Anyway, if I drop to a CMD prompt and release then renew
my IP configuration (ipconfig /release and renew)
everything works fine.

I AM receiving an IP address from my DHCP server the first
time.

I have no clue why this happens but the symptoms are the
same as the ones your having. Maybe someone has a clue ;)

Add me to the list of people with the same issue. Has anyone come up with
any solutions?

The primary DNS server setting of your clients should
point to the server that you're logging on to.

There is a knowledge base article describing this issue.
I'm sorry that I haven't taken the time to find it and
offer it here as I'm on a mission of my own right now.

If you're running a DHCP server, add an option to set the
primary DNS server to the IP of your Domain Controller.
If your DC doesn't run a DNS server then you may
disregard this information.
