Slow to access files over network w/ Explorer only

XP Pro, sp2, all critical updates applied, 100MB nic. This PC is slow to open
any files that reside on any server when trying to open it using My Computer
or Windows Explorer.

But when opening any files from within the application itself such as
Microsoft Word using the File menu the file comes up lighting fast!

I have tried:
- ipconfig /flushdns
- to browse using ip addresses instead of server names
- turning off simple file sharing
- Adding the SuppressionPolicy DWORD value to the registry as per MS article
829700
- turning off the antivirus software

Any ideas anyone? Suggestions are highly appreciated!

This behavior is commonly seen if you have too many files in the folder. The
explorer needs to render the display for all these files. One way is to break
the number of file sinto folder and see if the behavior changes.
Alternatively check if the list view improves the folder view.

Also check if the following kb helps

The behavior does not change if I alter the number of files in the folder or
by changing the views. I have already tried the MS article you suggest as I
mentioned that. What is troubling is that it works fine when opening a file
from within an application but not when using the explorer. I thought both
processes would be the same but apparently they are not.
