SLOW Startup

I need 143 seconds to start up windows xp pro. It used to take under 40
seconds.

Performance is otherwise ok and pitstop, com gives this desktop the highest
rating I had ever (1724) for a 2.8 GHZ 1 GB Ram computer.

What causes this long time startup?

Long time? 143 seconds isn't bad at all, and many people's startup is
slower..

My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it takes
to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is otherwise
satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about. Most people start their
computers once a day or even less frequently. In the overall scheme of
things, even a few minutes to start up isn't very important. Personally I
power on my computer when I get up in the morning, then go get my coffee.
When I come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it took to boot
and I don't care.

However if you do want to address it, it may be because of what programs
start automatically, and you may want to stop some of them from starting
that way. On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually
choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many
can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you
don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running
the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you
should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but
*which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no
effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is
determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost
in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information
about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

Many things can cause a long time for startup.
- First, there is the bios and windows settings. And just this should
require many pages of explanations and tips.
- Then there is your hardware configuration and related drivers, like
soundcards, videocards, aso. There is not a lot to do for this topic.
- Then come the startup programs. You should have only a few here:
antivirus, and VGA and audio setup. That' all !
- And finally, if you're an experienced user, there is the Windows Services.
A lot could be disabled here and you should end up with +/- 24 to 28
services, depending of your hardware and networking configuration. Ther are
many sites with clever explanations about this, and one of the best was
Black Viper, if it still exists. Google will help.

Initially, my PC (PIV, 3.2 Ghz) booted to Windows in +/- 130 sec, but
tweaking the points above, it was reduced to 46 sec. An I have a huge
networked video-editing config !

Thanks for the feedback.

1. I have nothing changed in the BIOS
2. I use Driveragent.com for the latest drivers and went through it just the
other day to be sure I have the latest drivers installed.
3. I have hardly anything in the Startup program.

I have gone to the VIPER site and printed out the recommendations.
When I go to MSCONFIG and then Services I see the various services, but I do
not see how I can disable them there.
Double clicking, right clicking does not bring up a window for Manual,
Running, or Disable.

Where do I do that?

Thanks in advance

Go to the Control Panel and select "Administrative Tools", then Services.
Right click on each service and go to Properties. There you can set the
service to disable, manual or auto. Disable a service only if you're 100%
sure you don't need it. If you have some doubts, set it to manual.
