I am using Windows XP Professional

The black screen that appears shortly after switching on the PC, where the
Windows XP logo is displayed and a progress bar runs at the bottom....

It is displayed for a LONG time... on an average about 40 seconds and
occassionally, for about a minute and a half!

That is a very long time compared to before... I've been using this system
for about 3 years.

My system config:
512 MB RAM
1.9 GHz Pentium 4 processor
36 GB HDD (appx. 13 GB free space in 4 partitions total - C: D: FAT32, E: F:
NTFS)
CD-R/CR-RW/DVD-ROM Drive
No Floppy drive

Please help me with slow boot problem.
Thanks!

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.

The System and the Application tabs contain lots of eventy. Where should I be
looking?

Moreover, no error or anything occurs during startup or boot, its just that
it is very slow.

Most likely the System log rather than the Application log. You are
interested in
Warnings and Errors not Information Reports. Post details of the first three
Reports
from the start of a single boot. Check whether these reports appear in
earlier boots
as an isolated error is not going to be what you are looking for!

Don't for get my earlier comments on drivers.

Another cause of slow boots can be Norton or McAfee products which can be
heavy
on resources.

Other similar ones (about 20 to 30) are present above it (I scrolled to the
bottom of the screen and then moved back up one by one)

It seems Windows Defender found something, but I wasn't notified while I was
working.

As I went scrolling up, I could see (probably hundreds of) error messages
that say something like
