XP startup too slow.

Hi

I have a windows XP SP2 laptop and a desktop. The configurations are

Laptop
CPU: 3.2 GHZ Hyper Threading
Memory: 1.28 GB - 333 MHz
HDD: 60 GB 5400 rpm
Auto Update and System Restore - Disabled.

Desktop
CPU: 2.8 GHZ
Memory: 512 MB

While me laptop is too slow to startup (takes about 2 minutes), my desktop
takes lessthan 30 seconds too start. As you can see laptop is a higher end
machine. What should I do to get better response and faster startup? Is it a
problem with RAM Speed? Please advise? Thanks.

Sounds like too much crap loading at startup - although like I do most of
the time - it shouldn't matter too much how long your system takes to start
up as long as it ends up running okay...

Check how many things load up using MSCONFIG...

I forgot to mention in the original post that of 1.28 GB of RAM 1 GB is of
speed 333 MHz and 256 MB is of speed 400 MHz. Will this contribute to the
performance issues. Will upgrading the RAM to 1 GB of 667 MHz resolve the
performance problems? Thanks.

The slowest memory on a given computer is your hard drive. It is like
10,000 times slower than physical RAM. And laptops often uses 2.5 inch
HD vs. 3.5 inch drives. Which by its nature, are slower yet. Notice that
your laptop is only a 5400 RPM? That is slow if it is on a desktop
machine.

333MHz isn't really all that slow. What's starting up when you start
Windows that's not necessary? Start with that. Also, as was mentioned by
another person, a 5400RPM 2.5" HD is going to be a lot slower than a 7200RPM
3.5" HD, and so that can also be a reason.

If you are using some kind of anti virus software, these programs are
notorious for causing long startups, but I guess that may be the price
you have to pay to protect your computer.
