all office apps work normal until I try to start excel.
When I start excel it takes a couple of minutes for the
program to startup. It then works normally, but all the
rest of the office apps then take minutes to startup
unless i shut down the computer and restart the system.
This did not act this way before. everything works fine
until I try to open excel? Any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

Hi Tim!

If this is very recent then Norton AV is possibly to blame:

Here's a post from "Doug" in the misc newsgroup:

If you have Norton there overnight update has caused some problems.
This is what I have found and posted elsewhere..

Just got through to Norton, as I thought they are now aware of this
problem (where not on my first call this morning). The situation can
be temporarily rectified by opening up your internet browser. Going to
tools/options/advanced then scroll down to security and uncheck the
following 2 box's if they are checked.
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for server certificate revocation.
<<End Quote

I suspect that Norton will resolve this PDQ.

Otherwise the most probable causes are:
** Windows 95/98/ME
Too much accumulated junk in:
C:\Windows\Temp folder
** Windows NT/2000/XP
Too much accumulated junk in:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp folder
** Excel 95/97/2000
Bloated Excel.xlb or Excel10.xlb file. I think that this has been
cured in Excel 2002 (XP) as I've not seen any reports of it happening.

Cures are:
Close down and re-start the computer so as to make sure that you've
finished any incomplete installations that use the tem folder.
The empty the temp folder of all files.

With bloated xlb file, locate the file using:
Start > Search > For files and folders
Search for *.xlb
If it is above around 30KB then it is bloating and should be deleted.
(Save a copy if you like but I don't think that much in terms of
toolbar modifications etc can be restored from a bloated file)

Hot off the presses!

Official Fix - Norton AV problem -

Go to the Symantec website:

http://www.symantec.com/

In the lower left hand corner you will see a tiny notice concerning the
January 7-8, 2004 Norton Anti-Virus slowdown. Click the link.

In red you will see the Solution. Click that link, it will take you to
VeriSign. Click the manual download link. Click Accept. When the dialog
box pops up click Open. The Windows Certificate Import Wizard will appear.
Just allow the Wizard to install the Certificate automatically. Here's a
screenshot:

Remember to RE-check the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" box
you UN-checked yesterday. The correct location of that box is on the
Symantec web-page where the VeriSign link is located.

Hi Gord!

Thanks! And there was us thinking it was because Symantec hadn't paid
their VeriSign bill and got disconnected from the electric supply.
