Slow start up and shutdown process

Hello there: My Lap top recently began to take it's time to start up and to
shutdown (Slower than normal), also I have noticed a slower than normal
display of all the document or file icons on the desktop or on any folder,
almost like they want to appear one at a time until all show up, In general
the machine is behaving slower than before and I want to see what I can do
before it crashes on me.
I am running Wondows XP Home SP2, with 1.60Gb processor speed, 512 Mb Dram
and 80Gb HD

What start-up apps have you installed just before slow-down?

Have you changed newer drivers?

Thanks for your response:
I Have not installed new application software, but in an attempt to
troubleshoot the problem I have restored the Windows twice and during the
process lost all the prior restore points. System has now began to save new
restore points since then.

I have not changed drivers either, however I did play around with the start
up programs and the running services with no luck. System is starting in
selective mode with soem of the services I don't need disabled.

PC use to shutdown in about 25 to 30 sec....Now it is taking about 70 and
sometimes 90 secs to completely shutdown....Most of the these 90 secs is
spent in the "saving settings" process.

Starting up is even worse. seems sluggish and program icons and applications
on the desktop appear very slowly and with generic icons that turn into the
correct icon style in after a few seconds. It takes about 150 secs to
completely start and stabilize.

Shutdown duration is affected because of services and new hardwares
especially enviroment devices like USB ones basically.

I tried the "troubleshooting services" process suggested in "Windows Help"
Through the "msconfig" screen. If I disable all processes and restart, I do
notice a difference in the time it takes to start and shutdown, However I do
not know enough about services to determine which I should keep disabled and
which not. Is there a plca I can go to look it up.

Hi Kimiraikkonen:
Thanks for the links for registry maintenance and the services.
I cleaned my registry and worked on the services, with very little
improvement, however during my reading of the various registry cleaning
packages I ran into a comment about Norton Antivirus long issues with windows
registry. I removed NAV and replaced it with Avast and resolved my slow start
up and shutdown problem.
My Lap top is now shutting down in les than 25 secs, The entire start up and
stabilization process is taking now 40 secs. All Icons on the desktop appear
now immediately without delays and all at one shot. Lap Top in general runs
faster and and the sluggish behavior went away.
Thank you again for your help, your recommended articles to read did pay off.
I am amazed about NAV issues, I had heard about ir but refused to believe,
It is true that we learn new things every day
Regards
Jorge
