Slow start-up and performance

I have been experiencing very slow performance lately.
When I get to the welcome screen, computer hangs there
for up to 7 minutes before my desktop appears. Also,
cannot always access my start button. Only programs on
the upper left side are visible and operative. The rest
are blacked out, including shut down button so I have to
shut down manually. I seem to move around pretty well
when I get into my programs or on the internet. Also, on
start-up, I get a pop-up box that tells me that "NT on-
access scanner service has encountered a problem. This is
new.

I have more than half of the memory in my hard drive
unused, so not sure inadequate memory is a problem.
Still,have dumped all unnecessary files, ran virus scans
and spyware scans, downloaded all security patches,
defraged my hard drive and finally restored system to
earlier date when my PC was running better. No
improvement. Am fairly computer illiterate so would

over 6,000 hits so you may find something there.
